Back to School: Protecting Our Children in Body and Spirit

“The prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.”Proverbs 22:3

As summer winds down, families across the nation prepare for the familiar rhythm of the school year. New supplies, freshly sharpened pencils, and packed lunches often dominate our attention—but parents and guardians must also be mindful of the safety and security risks that accompany the return to school.

We live in a day when both the physical and spiritual threats to our children are growing. The Lord has entrusted them into our care, and we must be vigilant.

1. Physical Safety on the Way to School

For many children, the journey to and from school presents its own risks—whether by walking, biking, riding the bus, or being dropped off.

  • Traffic Hazards – Teach children to use crosswalks, obey signals, and watch for distracted drivers.
  • Stranger Danger – Remind them not to engage in conversation with strangers or accept rides without your permission.
  • Buddy System – Encourage children to travel with a trusted friend whenever possible.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”1 Peter 5:8
While this verse warns of spiritual dangers, it also reminds us to cultivate watchfulness in all areas.

2. Security Risks Inside the School

The modern school environment brings its own set of concerns.

  • Bullying & Peer Pressure – These can harm a child’s emotional well-being and even their moral compass. Encourage open communication and remind them that their worth is found in Christ.
  • Emergency Procedures – Make sure your child knows what to do in case of a lockdown, fire, or severe weather drill.
  • Access Control – Ask your school about visitor policies and how they screen who enters the building.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”Proverbs 4:7
Equip your children with the wisdom to respond safely and the discernment to recognize unsafe situations.

3. Cyber and Digital Dangers

As technology becomes a bigger part of education, children face increasing exposure to online risks.

  • Social Media Boundaries – Limit public sharing of personal information, location, or schedules.
  • Cyberbullying – Monitor online interactions and address hurtful behavior early.
  • Device Safety – Use filters and parental controls to guard against harmful content.

“I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes…”Psalm 101:3
This applies not just to entertainment, but to every click, search, and post.

4. Spiritual Preparedness for the School Year

Beyond physical and digital protection, our children need spiritual armor.

  • Daily Prayer – Pray together each morning for wisdom, safety, and a bold witness for Christ.
  • Scripture Memory – Hide God’s Word in their hearts so they may stand firm when faced with temptation. (Psalm 119:11)
  • Christlike Character – Teach them to respond to challenges with grace, kindness, and truth.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God…”Ephesians 6:10-11

Conclusion: A Call to Watchfulness

We cannot shield our children from every danger, but we can prepare them—body, mind, and spirit—to walk wisely in a world that often opposes the truth of God’s Word. As parents, grandparents, and church members, we have a responsibility to train, equip, and watch over them.

As this school year begins, let us remember:

  • Pray for your children daily
  • Stay engaged in their education and relationships
  • Teach them to be vigilant and trust in the Lord’s protection

“The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”Psalm 121:8
